Daily Devotional: Psalms 27:1-4

Ps 27:1-4

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, I will be confident. One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

1 Peter 1:14-16

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Do you trust God? Do you really trust him to get you through the day when things are all wrong and seem to be getting worse? Do you trust him when people say things about you, many of which are not true? Do you trust him when those who are supposed to be your spiritual family turn against you and use all kinds ungodly tricks to try to destroy you? David trusted God, no matter who or what?

Our job as the children of God is to try to glorify him and to help others do the same. When we do what is right, it honors his holy name and glorifies him. When we do not act like Jesus in our attitudes or in our behavior it does not honor him but brings shame on his name. Nothing brings more honor than obedience. Jesus could have used all kinds of excuses to disobey but he always chose obedience.

The wonderful thing about determining to be obedient to God is that we only answer to him. So, what others think or say does not matter. What matters is whether he is pleased with us or not. There always has been, and always will be, those who think they have been appointed by God to police the entire body of Christ and to force their ideas upon all. In the days of Jesus, it was the Pharisees. They knew parts of the Law that they wanted to enforce but didn’t know anything about having a godly spirit. They did not know mercy, or compassion or even justice. This discord comes from the wisdom that is earthly and demonic.

O Lord God, giver of all good things, I thank you for your love, your mercy, your compassion and your true sense of justice. Thank you for being both just and the justifier through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Thank you for his resurrection that gives me hope for my resurrection and eternal life. While I am here on earth, use me to honor you and to bring others to Jesus. Help me keep my eyes on you, on Jesus, and on the things above. Be with and keep your people, especially those who are daily persecuted for their faith. I pray in the name of Jesus.
