Daily Devotional: Psalms 21:1-7
Ps 21:1-7
O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.
1 Tim 6:17-19
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
Jesus said that the person who is faithful over a few things will be given more, but he who is not faithful over a little amount, even what he has will be taken away. This applies in every area of our lives. The more we use what we have, the better we become with that part and the more we can accomplish. The more we know, the more we can learn. When we use what God has given us, the more he will add to what we have already. When we see opportunities to do good, we get more.
The key to this is putting our trust in God and recognizing that all we have and all we are is from him. He has given us life and he provides us with what we are capable of handling according to his will. In the context of the parable of the talents, the master gave each servant money according to his abilities. The master never expected anyone to perform beyond his or her ability. But as we use what we have and we grow, our ability grows, and we can manage even more. When we fail to use what we have been given, we lose what we do have. Study God’s word, pray for wisdom to use it, put it into practice. This will lead to a life of service in his kingdom, as well as service to others all around us.
O Lord God, give me a servant’s heart, a heart like Jesus. Increase my faith, give me wisdom to know better how to serve you, and then open my eyes to see each opportunity to do good. Forgive me when I fail. When I get off track, help me get back on the right way. Use me to help others do what is right. Remind me to do all that I do from a heart of love and to do it with compassion and tenderness. But when I need to be strong, give me strength to stand for what is right. Be with those who are serving you in difficult places. I pray in the name of Jesus.
