Daily Devotional: Proverbs 16:26-29
Prov 16:26-29
A worker’s appetite works for him; his mouth urges him on. A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire. A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends. A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good.
1 Peter 4:10-11
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Luke 17:10
So, you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’
“Hard work never hurt anyone.” I have heard this all my life, and it is almost always true (I suppose one could work so hard that it harmed them, but that doesn’t happen often.). Any honorable work we do is working for the Lord and it brings honor to his name. We need to use our time to serve others.
Now, I want to talk about something that has nothing to do with our verses this morning. As I was following my morning routine and making myself a cup of green tea with a little honey, it dawned on me that I learned how to make tea from my mother. Having grown up in Africa in a British Colony, she had lots of British traits, and one of them was having her tea.
We never know what we are teaching to someone who is watching us. It may be something as meaningless and small as how to make tea and how to properly squeeze the tea bag with a spoon but be sure that someone is watching what we do and how we do it. Children imitate adults that they look up to. It may be a parent or grandparent, or it may be a coach, teacher, preacher or just a friend, but they are watching. We must make sure that we set the right example for them to follow so they will want to be like Jesus.
O Lord God, give me a servant heart and use me to your glory in all I do and in all I say. Help me know how and when to keep my mouth shut and to really listen. Keep me conscience of the fact that others are watching me and use me as an example of following Jesus. Forgive me when I fail. I pray in Jesus’ name.
