Daily Devotional: Proverbs 9:1-6

Prov 9:1-6

Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says, “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.”

Matt 7:24-25

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had a foundation of rock.

All of us are building our house. Some of us are near completion and others are just beginning the construction. One of the things that makes this difficult is that we don’t know how much longer we have to build or even what it will look like when we are done. What we do know is that if we build it on the foundation of Jesus, we will have a beautiful mansion when it is completed.

Our life is our house. When we are young, we have these great plans of what it will look like or what we will accomplish. Most of us change those plans along the way, either by our own choosing or because things just don’t go the way we had planned. When we build on Jesus, we pray for his wisdom and then we let him be in charge of the blueprints and the construction. He will alter our lives to give us exactly what we need, if we truly trust him.

Only God can control the circumstances of our lives, and he will, if we put our trust in him and not in ourselves. The hard part is that so often we can’t see where he is taking us or what he is doing with us. Job never understood what was behind his problems. Moses could not see that for forty years; God was getting him ready for a job to begin when he was eighty years old. Joseph could not have imagined that being sold as a slave would turn out the way it did. But God knew!

O Lord God, give me wisdom to follow your will. Help me be strong enough to just live each day the best I can to be what you want me to be and to accomplish what you put on my blueprint for that day. Forgive me when my faith is weak and give me greater faith and renewed strength. Instead of getting frustrated or depressed, help me turn my life over to you with a daily renewed determination to be all you want me to be. Thank you for loving me enough to guide me. Thank you for Jesus, who makes this life worthwhile and gives me eternal life. In his name I pray.
