Daily Devotional: Proverbs 3:5-8

Prov. 3:5-8

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

Matt 6:19-21, 24

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

“Mammon” is a Semitic word meaning money or possessions. Jesus is saying that we cannot serve God and material things at the same time. This word includes both the physical and the intangible things such as position, power, education, or self-proclaimed wisdom or even our self-righteousness. We either put all of our trust, or dependence on God, or on ourselves and things.

John says that we are not to love this world or the things of this world because they will all pass away. All the desires of the flesh and the things in which we put our pride, will vanish and be gone. But the one who does the will of the Father will last forever. Moses gave up the passing pleasures of being royalty in Egypt for the opportunity to serve the God of his fathers.

God has revealed his wisdom to us in his word. As we study his word, the Spirit living in us gives us the understanding we need to know how to live to please him. We are to put our trust, our faith, in God as God. We put our faith in Jesus as the Son of God and as our risen Redeemer. We depend on his revealed word to guide us, knowing that it contains all the truth we need to be saved.

Romans 1:17

For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." NIV

Our Father who is in heaven, holy and reverend is your name in all the earth. Your majesty is far above my ability to comprehend. Your wisdom is more than my mind can grasp. Your power is more than all the powers that we as people have ever devised, even when they are all combined. My heart overflows with love and with gratitude because you know me, and even in my frailties, you love me and were willing to give your Son to die for my sin. Help me serve you by serving those around me. This prayer I offer in the name of Jesus, my Lord.
