Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:1-7

Ps 135:1-7

Praise the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord; praise him, you servants of the Lord, you who minister in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. For the Lord has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession. I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

Col 1:15-17

He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

The more we realize who God is and who Jesus really is, the less we feel that we understand, but the more we stand in awe and praise him. Everything that exists today was brought into being because of the word spoken by God. Jesus was a part of that creation (making something from nothing) and he still sustains it by the power of his word. He made it and he controls it by the power of his word.

It is by that same power that it will all come to an end. Adam and Eve messed up a perfect world with sin. The people on the plain of Shinar wanted to prove how smart they were by building a tower into the heaven, but God scattered them and stopped their work. Since the original sin in the Garden, people have been trying to take control of things, but it has not and will not happen. God is in control.

Morally, the world is messed up with sin. Environmentally, people have done a lot to mess up the perfection of God, but we will never destroy the world on our own. Only God can do that, and he will when his time is right. Over the centuries, God has allowed all kinds of governments, some good and some bad and a lot were just there. Each comes and each goes in accord with the timing of God. What we can do is pray that God will provide us a time and place to live godly lives in peace.

O Lord God, help me be a good steward of all you have put into my life. In spite of all the brilliance of mankind, all of the accomplishments, all of the so-called knowledge, and all of the accumulated wealth, it only exists because you have given it to us, and it will always be under your control. Help me use all of it for good and to glorify your holy name. Be with those who are being persecuted for their faith. Give what is needed to those who struggle to have food to eat and clothes to wear each day. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
