Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:113-120

Ps 119:113-120      Samekh

I hate double-minded men, but I love your law. You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees. You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain. All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore, I love your statutes. My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.

James 1:19-21

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

God knows what is best for us. When we live according to his word, we will find all of the things that we really need in life. It may not be a life of pleasure or filled with physical wealth, but it will be a life that is meaningful and gives us the inner peace and freedom from worry that all of us long to have. Living our lives like Jesus will give us a joy that the world cannot know or understand.

Listen. Listen to God, to his word. Listen to his Spirit speaking in our hearts. Listen without question or arguing. Accept the word that has been planted in you, as it can save you in the end. The world will make fun of you and of his word. Our culture will want to make you go away because the word of God is in conflict with what they believe and teach. But God is right, so follow him and his word.

Don’t let the world’s views or our cultures norms make you angry at these people. When Jesus saw the people as sheep without a shepherd, he had compassion. The sin angered him, but he had compassion on the ignorant people who had been led astray and who had never been taught about how to serve God. The sad thing was that they had been misled by their religious leaders who were so sure they had the word of God all figured out. Challenge what you are taught, using the word as the standard. It is not what I feel or think but what is said in his word, the Bible.

O Lord God, what a privilege to have your will revealed to all of mankind so that I can know what is right and what is wrong. Give me wisdom to understand it and the strength to live it. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. Lord, this world is filled with evil, so help me shine as a light in a dark sky as I follow your will. Help me remember that life is not just about me and my desires but use me to help others in their struggles. Thank you for Jesus. In his name I pray.
