Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:105-112

Ps 119:105-112      Nun

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it that I will follow your righteous laws. I have suffered much; preserve my life, O Lord, according to your word. Accept, O Lord, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws. Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

2 Cor 4:4-6

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

The Revolutionary War was fought for the freedom of the people living in the new land. Many wars have been fought since then for the same purpose, for freedom from unfair rulers and freedom from unfair laws and policies. We all cherish and celebrate our freedoms in this great country. But these freedoms are slowly and quietly being eroded and have been for most of our national history.

The worst loss of freedom for us is not national or political freedoms. It is the loss of freedom of our souls and our lives when Satan gradually takes control of our hearts. It doesn’t happen overnight. It will never be a bold proclamation that he is taking over. It happens when we slowly give over to his will instead of the will of God, one small desire, one single priority, one little temptation at a time.

Jesus gives freedom. The more we can give him our hearts desires and the more we allow him to control us, the more freedom we have to be happy and to live in peace. His Spirit will quietly mold us into his image so that we reflect his glory to all the world around us. By his power in us, we are free from worry and anxiety, no matter what we face because we know that he will take care of us and our needs.

O Lord God, what a blessing to be in Jesus and to know that you are always present in my life to take care of my every need. Thank you for the freedom from the consequences of sin that I have in Jesus Christ. Lord, I give you all my anxiety but too often I find that it is back with me again, so I ask you to please help me leave it with you so that I have your peace in my heart. Give your healing to those who are faced with diseases. Give your strength to all of us as we struggle to be all you want us to become. Help us draw near to you. In Jesus’ name I pray.
