Daily Devotional: Psalms 118:15-21

Ps 118:15-21

Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: "The Lord's right hand has done mighty things! The Lord's right hand is lifted high; the Lord's right hand has done mighty things!"  I will not die but live and will proclaim what the Lord has done. The Lord has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death. Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord through which the righteous may enter. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.

Jude 3-4

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Trust in the Lord! When we do this, we do not put our trust in ourselves. Our trust and our hope are not in what we know or understand. We do not depend on what we have accomplished. When we trust in self, in our wisdom, in our good deeds (no matter how much good we do), in our affiliation with the right people, or anything else, other than Jesus Christ, we are not trusting in the Lord.

This is true when we are talking about our salvation. It is also true when we are talking about the care and protection of God in our daily lives. When we pervert the grace of God and turn it into permission to sin, we are trusting ourselves and denying Jesus Christ. On the other hand, Paul says that when we trust in our own works, we are also denying Jesus and his grace.

No matter what David faced in his life (and he faced a lot!), he always turned to the Lord for the answers and for his help. Each time that he was delivered, he would turn in praise to the Lord and give him all the credit. He was never afraid or ashamed to burst into praise or thanksgiving to the Lord for what he had done.

Praise and glory and honor belong to you O God! You made me and you made all that is in existence. You created the earth, and you sustain it by the word of your Mighty Son. Thank you that I don’t have to worry about how and when this world will come to an end. Help me to be a good steward of all you have given to me and to use it to your glory. Increase my faith so I will look forward to the day that I can live with you in eternity. Lord, I have several friends who are sick, and I ask you to be with them and give them healing and your peace. Use me to encourage them. Thank you for Jesus my Savior, in whose name, I offer this prayer.
