Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:30-36

Ps 105:30-36

Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers. He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country. He turned their rain into hail, with lightning throughout their land; he struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their country. He spoke, and the locusts came, grasshoppers without number; they ate up every green thing in their land, ate up the produce of their soil. Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.

Acts 7:5-7

But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child. God spoke to him in this way: 'Your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,' God said, 'and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.'

I am afraid that we all forget God at times in our lives. We get busy with our job, with the kids, with rushing around to do all the things that must be done. We go to church. We still pray on occasions. We may even read our Bibles once in a while, but we forget God is behind it all. We forget God is really our God. If asked, we would probably deny it. But we live our lives as though there is no God who is really in control and who loves us and will take care of us, in his own way.

It is not that we deny him or even his power. We just fail to open our eyes to see all he is doing for us. We rely on our own strength instead of relying on him. We try to fix our own problems instead of letting him have his way. We make decisions without consulting him or even considering how it will affect our relationship with him. We think, we plan, we live, without considering if it is his will for us.

I have been worried. I have been depressed. I have tried to fix what was wrong, on my own. I have decided what was best for me, without his direction. When we have trouble, we need to take it to the Lord in prayer. “O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” He will hold us in his arms and shield us, in him there is peace.

O Lord my God, increase my faith and give me your strength. Open my eyes to see your work in my life. Keep me from getting so busy in life that I forget that you are working in me and have a job for me to do. Give me a heart of compassion and mercy instead of a cold heart that criticizes and judges others. Help me remember that I am right with you, only because you have forgiven me in Jesus, so I must forgive others who offend me. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
