Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:1-8

Ps 89:1-8

I will sing of the Lord's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, 'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.'" Selah The heavens praise your wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings? In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. O Lord God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O Lord, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

Heb 6:17-18

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.

God is faithful. His word is true. His promises are sure. Since God dwells in eternity and is not bound by time, we may not see his promises fulfilled in our lifetime. It may seem that things are not going according to his will or what he has said, but he never fails. By his nature as God, it is impossible for him to lie.

The men and women who trusted God were said to have died without receiving the promises, but they died in faith, looking for a better city which was designed and built by God. They realized that the ultimate promise of God is not even about this world or our lifetime. It is about that heavenly city and eternal life.

This is why we are urged to keep our eyes on Jesus and to set our minds on the things above, where he is seated at the right hand of God. It is also why Paul said that he no longer lived but Christ Jesus lived in him. Christ is our life. We are to have hearts that are fully devoted to him because we love him. It is in this complete devotion that we find joy, peace and the abundant life – on earth.

O Lord God, I thank you for your love for me. Thank you for your mercy and your grace shown to me in Jesus Christ. Thank you for revealing your will to me and to all of mankind. Help me to let it truly sink into my heart and my mind that it means for Jesus to be my Lord and my King. Give me a submissive heart, a pure heart, and a willing heart to serve him. O God, be with our nation and be merciful to us. Turn the hearts of our leaders toward you and your word. Give us leaders who will respect you as God and trust you. I pray in the name of Jesus my King.
