Daily Devotional: Psalms 84:9-12

Ps 84:9-12

Look upon our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.

Heb 12:2-3

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

God is our loving heavenly Father and jealously desire for us to be devoted to him, to trust him completely, and to worship him from our hearts. He has done all we need to be able to live with him in eternity, free from all the trouble, cares, trials, sickness and death that pervades this life. His revealed Word gives us all we need for life and for godliness. In Christ we can have all we need to be complete.

But we must be focused, focused on Jesus who has given all for us. He died so we can live. He lives again so we can live forever. To have this life, we must die to sin so that righteousness controls us instead of the desires of this world. It takes great faith to focus our attention and our life on that which we cannot see with our physical eyes. Yet, we can see and feel his presence in us as we see the fruit of the Spirit growing in our hearts and in our lives. He is ever present in us.

Over the years there have been several times that people have told me that my preaching reminds them of my dad and his preaching. Given the respect I have always had for my dad, it is a great honor to be compared to him. How much greater to be told that we have traits that are those of our heavenly Father! As we allow the Spirit to live in us, we allow him to live in us and we allow Jesus to live in us as well. Whatever we face in life, we fix our eyes on Jesus, we hold his hand, and we feel his presence with us and in us. He will not forsake us!

O Lord God, help me love you with all my heart, all my soul, and with all my being. Give me a pure heart, a heart devoted to you and devoted to serving you. I need your wisdom to make the right choices and I need your strength to carry out your will in my life. Help me be a servant to you as I serve those around me. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. Give your peace to those who are hurting and struggling. Be with the leaders of our nation so we can live in peace. Bless your people, wherever we are in this world. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
