Daily Devotional: Psalms 79:5-8

Ps 79:5-8

How long, O Lord? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name; for they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his homeland. Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

Rev 6:9-10

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?"

Too often we get impatient with God. We know we need him, and we have poured out our hearts to him. We have put our trust in him. But we see nothing. We hear nothing. There are no changes, and our needs seem to be getting bigger. How long O God, how long? We need him now! Where is he when we need him?

God’s timing is perfect! He waited until Abraham had tied up his son Isaac, he had put him on the altar, he had the wood ready to burn, and he raised the knife to end his life. Only then did God put the ram in the bushes. Paul was beaten, put in jail with his feet in the stocks and had to wait several hours before the earthquake came and God released him. Look at the life of Joseph and how unfair it must have seemed to him when put in prison for resisting temptation to sin.

Faith is trusting God, even when it does not make sense to do so. Faith is waiting on God when it seems that he should have responded a long time ago. Faith is demonstrated the best when we hold on to God, even when we don’t understand why he is not responding. Faith is living for God when it seems to be futile.

God’s timing is perfect! He knows just what we need to help us become our very best. He knows where we need to be to help that other person whose struggles are so much greater than our own. God can use us and our troubles and our heartaches to help others who are praying for deliverance also. Remember, life is not about “me”, life is about bringing honor and glory to God!

Thank you, O God, for your love shown to me in more ways than I can count. You give me so much more than I deserve. You have filled my life with people who love me and who care for me, both family and friends. You have given me so many opportunities to serve you by serving others (and I know that in my selfishness that I have failed to see many of these – forgive me). Give your healing and your peace to those who are emotionally burdened or weighed down in grief. Give us godly leaders so we can serve you in peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
