Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:50-56

Ps 78:50-56

He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague. He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham. But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the desert. He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies. Thus, he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken. He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes. But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.

Heb 8:7-9

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said: "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.

We often marvel that the children of Israel saw the many miracles of God and then still turned away from him and refused to trust him. But we need to look at ourselves as we remember that these things are written for our learning so that we don’t repeat the same mistakes. John says the many miracles of Jesus were recorded so that we can have a basis for our belief in him. We can see the many miracles by the power of God all through the ages. But do we believe?

The Israelites were just plain people like us, and they got sidetracked by the cares of everyday life, just like we do. They saw what was before them on that day but failed to learn from their history or to look at tomorrow by faith in God. Too often, we today, get sidetracked from our faith by the cares of life. Not things that are wrong in themselves, but things that consume so much of our time, our energy, and our money. We must be faithful to our covenant with Jesus Christ.

O God, my heavenly Father, it is so wonderful to be your child and to know that Jesus is my King. Help me get my priorities right in my heart so they will be right in my life. Even in my daily activities, help me share Jesus and what it means to have your Spirit living in me. Guide me to accomplish what you want me to do so that you will be glorified. Lord, I am concerned about the ungodly culture around me, so I ask you to give us leaders who will want to follow you. Thank you for being with my wife in her sickness and for giving her healing. In Jesus name.
