Daily Devotional: Psalms 72:8-14

Ps 72:8-14

He will rule from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. The desert tribes will bow before him, and his enemies will lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him; the kings of Sheba and Seba will present him gifts. All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.

Heb 6:9-12

Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case — things that accompany salvation. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.

Throughout the generations that have inhabited the earth, we all have failed to accept the blessings of God by not being submissive to him and by not putting our trust in him. There have been relatively few individuals who have really done this well and they have been rewarded in various ways. But God has promised to shower his blessings on those who truly allow him to be Lord and King.

In Jesus Christ we are promised blessings today. This is true for individuals, for families, for churches, and for nations. It is up to us to accept the things he has in store for us. This is not necessarily material wealth or a lifestyle of ease. These will come as he sees we need them and can properly handle them but, in his wisdom, other things may dictate that what we need is a lack of these things in our lives.

What is always sure is that he will deliver the needy and he will aid those who are afflicted. The weak and oppressed will find strength and deliverance. When life is hard (and it will be at times for all of us), he will always give his grace, sufficient for our time and need. But these blessings are only for those who are in Christ.

O Lord, my Lord, you alone are God and Jesus is above all things. Thank you for letting me know that Jesus is the sustainer of all creation. Help me, in the face of so much false science, to always accept your truth and to trust in you. Lord, I am so concerned about the lack of morality in our nation and the proliferation of evil, ungodliness, and lack of respect for authority. Please do not give up on us but give us a time of repentance and healing. Use me to lead others to you and help those who are hurting and struggling. Help me show the love of Jesus and his perfection in my life so others will follow him. In his holy name I pray.
