Daily Devotional: Psalms 65:9-13

Ps 65:9-13

You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. The grasslands of the desert overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.

Rev 3:14

"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation.

We can know exactly what time the sun will rise on any given day, in any part of the world. In fact, each day can be predicted with the time of sunrise and sunset, even years in advance. God’s world is made with exact precision. We never have to wonder if the seasons will change or be the same for a year or so, depending on where we are in the world. While there are variations and trends that seem to have existed for centuries, these variations seem to also go in cycles.

Jesus has it all under control. He can determine all of the weather patterns, he can unleash the typhoon or restrain the tornado. He alone determines if we will have a mild winter or the harsh summer. But even more important than all of this, he is the one who allows rulers to come to power and he removes them at will.

What God does not control and what Jesus refrains from controlling is our hearts and our minds. He leaves it up to each of us to decide if we will trust him. It is our choice if we serve him, honor him, or blaspheme his holy name. Certainly, he could make any of us do his will. He could force us to sing praises to his name. He has the power to make the atheist confess Jesus as Lord. But he lets us choose.

But choices have consequences, in spite of the modern teaching otherwise. We will all give an accounting to the one who made us. The sooner we realize this and the quicker we give him our lives, the happier we will be. The more we trust him and the more we serve him, the more he will be with us and care for us.

O Lord God, thank you for creating such a wonderful creation for us to enjoy. The beauty of the earth is never ending. The glory of the skies never cease. This glory and this beauty is but a reflection of your nature and it is you who deserves the praise. Knowing that Jesus is in control of all creation is a very comforting thought. Help me submit my heart and my will to him so that your Spirit will control me in increasing measure. Help me see, appreciate, and enjoy your creation. Give your peace to those who are suffering and troubled. I pray in the name of Jesus.
