Daily Devotional: Psalms 48:1-7

Ps 48:1-7

Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain. It is beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth. Like the utmost heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King. God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress. When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together, they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror. Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor. You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish shattered by an east wind.

Jude 24-25

To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy- to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

I am proud to be an American! I feel that I have been blessed to be born in this nation and to have so many freedoms and opportunities that for many in the world is only a dream. For most of my life there has been economic boom and we have had relatively few major wars. I have been able to live a life of peace.

But what is more important than this is that I belong to the kingdom of God and Jesus is my King. Since the day I was made a citizen of his country, we have been at war with a power and kingdom that encompasses all of the world. Our battle is not against flesh and blood but is against the powers of darkness. Satan has gained control of most of the world and so evil seems to presently prevail.

The God who gave Israel their land and who made them into a great nation is the same God who is watching over his kingdom today. He has handed all authority over to his Son and he reigns with justice and righteousness. But our King was once one of us on earth and he knows our frailties and our weaknesses, and he understands the lure of temptations that we face daily. While we may not see it here, behind the scenes he is still in control. He knows each of us by name and he is always watching out for our good. When we serve him as Lord, he uses all that happens in life to make us more like him and to get us ready to live with him.

Heavenly Father it is such a blessing to be your child and to know that Jesus is my Savior, my Lord, but also my brother who speaks to you on my behalf. Thank you for allowing me to be born in this time and place in history. Thank you for the godly parents you gave me and for the influence of so many wonderful people you have put into my life over the years. Thank you for giving me a wife and a family who always encourage me to live for you. Keep me from being selfish and use me to help others with what you have given to me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
