Daily Devotional: Psalms 47:1-9

Ps 47:1-9

Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth! He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved. Selah God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

Matt 6:24-25

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?

At any given time in the history of the world, there seems to be only a few nations that hold most of the power. A few times there was only one nation that seemed to control the world and at other times there were several that shared it. Some of these had good rulers and some were very wicked. There was none greater than King David in Israel of old and he was very good. Then there was Nebuchadnezzar or the Roman Caesars or Egyptian Pharaohs who were wicked beyond belief.

Nebuchadnezzar thought he had arrived. He had conquered most of the world and had built cities and large palaces. There was not anyone greater than he, or at least so he thought. But after he was humiliated and made to live as a wild beast with dew on his back and grass as his food, he humbled himself to God.

This same God who controls nations is the God who controls your life and mine. It may be because we submit to him or it may be that he uses us for his purpose, but either way, God is in control. So we, like David, need to submit to him and confess that he is Lord of lords and King of kings to enjoy his blessings and his protection.

O Lord my Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth. Your majesty and your wisdom is beyond my ability to proclaim. Your matchless love is shown in your mercy toward me. I need you every hour in every part of my life. Fill my heart with your goodness and teach me to be compassionate and forgiving to others. Give us leaders in our nation so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives. Take away all of those who ridicule your name and who ignore your precepts. Give your peace to those who are hurting. Increase my faith. I pray in the name of Jesus.
