Daily Devotional: Psalms 45:7-12

Ps 45:7-12

You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad. Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir. Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear: Forget your people and your father's house. The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord. The Daughter of Tyre will come with a gift, men of wealth will seek your favor.

Mark 12:35-37

While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." ' David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd listened to him with delight.

Who was the greatest king in the Old Testament? Many would argue that it was Solomon. He was the wisest king with the greatest wealth, and he also built the temple, wonderful gardens and many palaces. But it was David who had the favor of God and it was David to whom it was promised that his seed would reign on his throne forever. So the Christ is called the son of David, not the son of Solomon.

The thing that made David so great was his devotion to God. He had a heart that was fully devoted to serving God and doing his will. Solomon served God, but it says that his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord as was his father, David. It was David that was held as the standard for all the kings that followed.

Combine these thoughts with the reply of Jesus when he was asked which of the commandments was the greatest. He said it was to love the Lord God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. That is being fully devoted to the Lord our God. This is the attitude of Jesus when he said he came to earth to do the will of the Father. It is reflected in Paul when he said that he no longer lived, but it was Christ Jesus who lived in him. We need this mind in us today.

O Lord God, give me a pure heart, a devoted heart, a heart of love, and a heart of compassion. Keep me from thinking more highly of myself than I should by always remembering that all I have and all I am is from you. I pray a special prayer for my wife, Dianne as she faces her radiation treatments. Lord, I also pray for others who are taking treatments and those who are having and getting over surgeries. I ask that their faith will be strong and you will fill them with your peace as they put their trust in you each day. Use me to help them. I pray in Jesus’ name.
