Daily Devotional: Psalms 33:1-11

Ps 33:1-11

Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be, he commanded, and it stood firm.  The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

Col 1:15-18

He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

When things are really bad in our lives, we tend to focus on these and not on the good around us or the deliverance from the Lord. The worse things are, the more we have the tendency to try to fix them ourselves. We forget that the God who made us is still in control and that Jesus is still the one who sustains everything and holds it all together. Jesus is still over all of heaven and earth. He is Lord!

Jesus (and Paul) reasoned that since God made it all and since Jesus keeps it all running as it should, when we put our trust in him, we do not have any reason to worry or be anxious. It may seem at the moment that there is no hope. But the Lord is near! It may feel like things will never get any better, but Jesus said when we are burdened down, we can trust him and he will take our load and give us one that is light and easy to bear. He has been in our shoes and he cares.

O Lord God, help my unbelief. Give me added strength to let go of my burdens and to really trust you in times of trials. Help me focus on the beauty all around me and see the love shown by so many and trust you to hold my hand. Thank you for your wonderful love and for never leaving me or forsaking me, even when life seems unbearable. You have carried me through so many hard times and you have delivered me from problems that seemed impossible. Worthy is the Lamb to receive glory and honor, to Jesus my Lord in whose name I pray.
