Daily Devotional: Psalms 24:1-10

Ps 24:1-10

The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Selah Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty--he is the King of glory. Selah

2 Tim 2:11-13

Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

What does the word “Selah” mean? I have been asked this question many times and have also noticed when several people read the Psalms in public, they simply skip the word in their reading. It is a biblical word and worth considering.

When we look up the word, what we find is that no one really knows what its intended meaning is in the Psalms. It is defined as a musical notation, similar to a rest in our music today and is intended to cause one to pause and consider what is being said, or it means much the same as our word “amen” and is used to show that we approve of what is being said, or it is a rock or a crag in the mountain and used to mean something that is solid or sure. Other possible meanings are given.

Actually, all of these are similar in that they denote something that is calling us to pause and think about what is being said because it is a for sure truth. The Lord is our rock. He is our fortress. He is the creator and he established all that we know in our world and around it. He alone is worthy of true honor. He is reverend in a way that cannot be used to describe any mortal being. He is King of Glory. Selah

O Lord, our Lord, King of Glory, strong and mighty, I thank you for revealing to me that you know who I am and you know my every need, my failures, my ambitions, my desires, and my strengths. You know me and you still care about me in spite of my shortcomings. Thank you for being a God of certainty, solid as a rock, and thus providing me a solid foundation. Thank you for sending Jesus to be my Rock and my Foundation in life. Help me build my life on him and his teaching. Use me to help others and to encourage those who are struggling. In Jesus name.
