Daily Devotional: Psalms 147:15-20

Ps 147:15-20

He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast? He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel. He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.

Matt 6:9-13

This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.

When God commands, things happen. Whatever he wishes to be, comes to pass, and does so according to his timing. So we read: when the time was right, the children of Israel were released from bondage, when the wickedness of the Amorites was full, they took the land, when the time was right, Jesus was born into the world. It all took place according to the will of God.

So many times in history, people (individuals, groups, nations) have decided that they are really powerful or really wise or really in control and begin to do what they think is really great, only to be destroyed. Think about the tower of Babal or the King of the world empire, eating grass or even when David became proud and numbered the people so he could brag about his accomplishments.

The point is that God is in control and he does what he chooses to do. He will let us go our own way and he will let us live like we want to live, but we all will stand before him and give an account of our lives. When we (individual, group, nation) begin to think we are in control, we need to remember the history recorded in the Bible and the warning: “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!” Since God is over all, we need to trust him, willingly submit to him and to his will and then, as much as we can, be obedient to him. He is our God and he loves us and has made us his people, his family. Praise the Lord!

O Lord God, what a joy to know that you are in control of this world. When I look around, it often does not seem that way because evil abounds. Thank you for allowing each of us to make our own decisions about our lives but help me keep my eyes focused on Jesus and on the things above, where he is seated at your right hand. Help me submit to your will in every part of my mind and in my life, so I will bring you honor and be able to lead others to you. Bless those who are sick, those who are filled with grief and hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus.
