Daily Devotional: Psalms 147:7-14

Ps 147:7-14

Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp. He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call. His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love. Extol the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion, for he strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you. He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.

Heb 3:12-14

See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

I had an occasion recently when I met a political dignitary, and he shook my hand and called me by name. I have to admit that it made me feel pretty good that this person remembered my name. (The fact that he cares enough to remember me and others and calls us by name, may be why he keeps getting elected.) We like to be known and we like to be remembered. We want to know that we matter.

While this man was introduced to the audience as an honored guest, his position really means nothing to the one who put him there and who controls the entire universe. But the God of heaven does know that man and his name, but he also knows my name and he knows all about me and my life. This is because God really does care about me and what I am doing and what I face in life. I do matter.

The God who created all things and whose Son sustains them, knows the name of every part of his creation. He even wants us to come and live with him, but not just a short while. He wants us to live with him forever. He has prepared a place for each of us so that everything will be perfect, a place with no pain or suffering, a place with no sickness or death. There is no darkness or night there because the glory of God shines forth and it will illuminate things. Praise the Lord!

O Lord God, it is with awe that I come to you. I recognize that you are Supreme, over all the earth and that you establish each nation, and every ruler is in power only by your willingness. Help me always show respect to the ones over me, even when I do not agree with their philosophy or decisions. Even more, help me always know, feel, and show respect to you and to your holy name. Thank you for loving me and caring about my life. I ask your blessings on those who are sick and those who are hurting emotionally. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
