Daily Devotional: Psalms 147:1-6

Ps 147:1-6

Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him! The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.

Matt 6:25-27

Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Who can measure the kindness and the goodness of God? Jesus said that he sends the rain on the just and on the unjust. Our Father takes care of his creation because he cares. Since he knows the stars by name and he sees the sparrow that falls to the ground, we know that he sees us and cares about what happens to us, both good things and the bad. He feels our pain and rejoices when we rejoice.

When measured in comparison, all of the physical things in our universe, and all of the animal kingdom, pale to the greatness of mankind. We are made in his likeness, with a special mission of trusting him, praising him, and bringing honor to his holy name. “What is man that you are mindful of him?” While we are lower than the angels, we reign over his creation as we tend and care for it.

So, what does the Great God of the universe ask of us, of you and me? He requires that we trust him as God. He wants us to walk humbly and follow his will. His desire is for us to allow his love to fill our hearts, so that we show it to others in our attitudes and our actions. We love because he loves us. He wants us to be willing to forgive, even those who do not deserve it or who admit they need it. He has forgiven us when we did not deserve it and is willing to forgive all people.

Our Father in heaven, holy and reverend is your name in all the earth. You alone are Sovereign, with all power and worthy of all honor and glory. Help me be willing to totally trust you in every part of my life. Help me empty me of myself and let you reign supreme in my heart. Lord, there are so many who are hurting and struggling from bitterness in their hearts and I ask you to help them learn to love and replace the bitterness and hatred with your love. Heal those who are grieving and those filled with anxiety. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
