Daily Devotional: Psalms 138:1-8

Ps 138:1-8

I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the "gods" I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted. May all the kings of the earth praise you, O LORD, when they hear the words of your mouth. May they sing of the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD is great. Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures forever--do not abandon the works of your hands.

Col 1:15-18

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Each of us will choose to serve God or one of the gods of this world and we will make this choice each day of our lives. The gods of this world of our own making and they can do nothing for us, other than make us feel good for a short while and give us false hope for eternity. They have no value in making us better people or in helping us endure the trials of life. They are not gods at all but falsehood.

On the other hand, there is a God who made us and all things that exists. This God is Holy and Supreme, he is loving and compassionate. He is a God of love and only wants what is best for all of his creation. He will draw near to those who draw near to him and he will give us peace in turmoil, joy in suffering, and genuine hope in despair. In Jesus Christ, he gives us eternal life, in a home that has no pain, no death, nor even night. In his presence is always light, joy and bliss.

O Lord God, give me greater faith, more strength, and deeper wisdom to live for you and never give in to the allurements of this world. Guide me in your path to do your will in all things. When I fail, open my eyes to see my sin and give me your continued forgiveness in Christ. Lord, be with our nation and our leaders that they will recognize you as the only true God and will respect your word as truth. Help us as citizens to show respect to those over us and to know how to live at peace with each other. Strengthen all of your children to be holy. I pray in Jesus name.
