Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:13-18

Ps 106:13-18

But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his counsel. In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wasteland they put God to the test. So he gave them what they asked for but sent a wasting disease upon them. In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the LORD. The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the company of Abiram. 18 Fire blazed among their followers; a flame consumed the wicked.

Phil 1:27-28

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved-and that by God.

When things are going badly in our lives, we call out to God to save us and in that moment, we view ourselves doing all kinds of things to better serve him. We may even make some promises to God in our minds because we are in such distressing circumstances. But do we keep our vows to him? When God delivers us from our pressing trials, do we forget from where our salvation has come?

God is too often our emergency parachute, our last resort, instead of being our constant safety net and our first line of defense. I have heard people say that we should not bother God with our small problems but that is foolish talk. As a father and grand-father, I can tell you that no concern is too small that I would not want to hear about it and try to help. God is our Father and nothing is too small for us to turn to him in prayer and then truly trust him to take care of it in his way.

Nothing is too big for God to take care of in your life or in mine. He has not said he will take away our problems, or even our pain, but he will always give us what we need to make it through them. As he told Paul when he was repeatedly asking to have his “thorn” removed; his grace is sufficient for us, so that his power will be made perfect in our weakness. The hard part is giving him complete control.

Lord God, help me give you the key to the last box of my heart and my life so that I do not hold onto anything, or think that I am in control. I know that you are capable of doing whatever you may choose to do and that you will protect me in your way and your time. Give me greater faith. Give me wisdom to know what I need to do in every situation and give me greater faith so I will have your strength in my life to do what you want me to do. Keep me from procrastinating about what I need to be doing, but also teach me to wait on you. In Jesus name.
