Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:28-36

Ps 105:28-36

He sent darkness and made the land dark--for had they not rebelled against his words? He turned their waters into blood, causing their fish to die. Their land teemed with frogs, which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers. He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country. He turned their rain into hail, with lightning throughout their land; he struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their country. He spoke, and the locusts came, grasshoppers without number; they ate up every green thing in their land, ate up the produce of their soil. Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood.

1 Cor 10:11-12

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

Do you ever read these stories in the Bible and wonder how you would have reacted if you had been one of the people involved? It is so easy for us to read them and think that these people sure were stubborn or they sure did not listen to God or if that had been me, I would have done differently. The truth is that most of us follow the crowd, so we would have acted just like most of them did in their time. But we could have been the ones who were different.

All of the plagues were warnings to Pharoah and to Egypt but they would not listen to him. Seven of the ten were what would have been considered as events of nature, just somewhat of a fluke. But God used these things for his purposes and he still uses ‘’nature” to warn us and the world around us that he is God and that we must follow his will. We can see his power or we can call it nature.

The same word of his power that created all things is the same power that is in control and sustains his creation today. Paul said that Jesus created all things and in him all things hold together. When we begin to think that we have everything figured out and we are doing so well, we are in danger of falling from his will and from his grace. The more we submit to his will, the more we can enjoy his grace.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your love and for your grace shown to me in so many ways. Thank you for the material things I enjoy and even take for granted too often. Thank you for the spiritual blessings in Jesus Christ, and especially for the forgiveness of my sin which allows me to be counted as righteous in your sight. Thank you for the many friends you have put into my life and for the encouragement each gives to me. Help me submit to your will in all things, and to be used by you as you see best. I pray in the name of Jesus.
