Daily Devotional: Psalms 97:1-12

Ps 97:1-12

1 The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. 2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3 Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. 4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. 7 All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols--worship him, all you gods! 8 Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments, O LORD. 9 For you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. 10 Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11 Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. 12 Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.

Trust the Lord with all your heart. Now, let that sink in with all of the implications that are involved with it. This means that we believe that there really is a God out there who sees and knows what is going on in our lives and even in our minds. He is God, so he made everything that exists. As God, he also has the right to decide what is right and what is wrong, not so much as a mental exercise, but as a reflection of his very nature. He is inherently right in all he does.

Since we totally trust him as God, we will seek to please him in everything we do and all we say. We will let his Spirit control our thoughts and mold us into the image of his Son. We understand that he alone can determine our future and guard us as we seek to live for him. We trust him now and with our eternity.

This trust also means that we put our confidence in him and in Jesus and not in the things we have accomplished or the things we have accumulated. All we do in life and all we have are just products of his grace toward us and are not our own doing. This lessens the value of our bank accounts and diminishes the worth of our portfolio because these are only things that he has put into our care for a short time, and their only true value is how we use them to bring glory to God.

O Lord my God and my Rock, I am so glad that I can put my trust in you and not have to depend on the passing things on earth. I ask you to be with our nation and give us leaders who will seek peace and harmony among all people. Give us leaders who will put their trust in you and will be guided by your will. Lord, I have several friends who are sick and some who are taking treatments and some who are hurting and struggling, so I ask you to be with each of them and give them your healing and your peace. Holy is your name and the name of Jesus.
