Daily Devotional: Psalms 95:1-11

Ps 95:1-11

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. 3 For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; 7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways." 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."

Heb 4:1-2

1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

God has shown his great power in so many ways and we have recorded in the Scripture many, many instances where his power is made known. He showed himself to Israel at the mountain when it quaked, he demonstrated his power when he parted the waters and when he brought water from the rock and when he sent bread from heaven. Their clothes and their shoes did not wear out.

God still shows his power to us today in the wind and rain, in the oceans and in the skies. When we declare the beauty of nature, we are admiring his power and his wisdom shown for us. Paul said that all who have seen the creation of God are without excuse because he has made himself known to them.

The gospel of Jesus only has value when we allow it to create faith in our hearts; a faith that causes us to accept his grace and then live for him, according to his word. Based on this obedient faith, we can enter his promised eternal rest.

Heavenly Father help me build my faith as I study your word. Increase my faith so that no matter what I face in life, I will trust you and your goodness. Help me get my eyes off of this world and all the things it offers so I will be focused on Jesus and on the things above. Remind me that my salvation is based on you and your grace and not on any merit of my own. Keep me from ever thinking that I am above or better than others because I am what I am by your grace. Be with our nation and our leaders so we can live in peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
