Daily Devotional: Psalms 92:9-15

Ps 92:9-15

9 For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. 10 You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. 11 My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. 12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15 proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him."

Rom 8:12-16

13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

What a blessing and a joy to be a child of the God who created all things and who is in control of all creation. Our Father cares about us and he is ever watching over us to protect us from the evil one. His love is everlasting and he has shown us that love in sending his Son to die for our sins. Like the Father in the story of the prodigal son, he cares about us and wants what is best for us.

But he will allow us to live our own lives and live them as we please. If we want to wander away from his care, he will let us do so. It grieves him when we neglect him but he will not force us to stay in his house. Satan is the prince of this world and his allurement is always enticing but it only yields temporary pleasure.

We have the Spirit of God living in us and we can approach the Father as “Abba” Father, which is a term of endearment and closeness. While we never want to be disrespecting or flippant to God, the word “Abba” is close to our term “daddy” and shows just how ready he is to hear us. His Spirit gives us the assurance that we are the children of God and he is always near us to protect us.

Heavenly Father it is such a wonderful thought to be your child and to know that you are with me, even in the darkest times of my life. Help me live a holy life and be devoted to you and to your word. But help me open my eyes to see the many opportunities you give me to help others in so many ways. Keep me from being selfish or greedy but empower me to give of myself and my best, just as you gave your Son for me. Give your healing to the sick, your power to the struggling and your peace to those who are anxious. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
