Daily Devotional: Psalms 91:1-8

Ps 91:1-8

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." 3 Surely, he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

Eph 6:23-24

23 Peace to the brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

God knows the heart of all mankind. It was for this that David was selected to be the king of Israel. It was for this same reason that the ones who seemed to be the most religious in the days of Jesus, were also the most condemned by him. This means that he knows why we are doing what we are doing. He understands that some are struggling more than others and some just appear to be righteous.

Those who serve God must serve him in spirit and in truth. What Jesus was saying to the woman at the well, was that our service to God is not determined by the place where we worship nor who surrounds us, but it must be genuine and sincere. To put on an appearance of service or righteousness is hypocrisy and is never acceptable to God. God knows the heart and he is the only one who does.

Just because someone gets caught up in some sin, does not mean they are being hypocritical in their heart. David was a man after God’s own heart but look at all the sins he committed in his lifetime! The measure of his sincere devotion to God was how quickly he repented when his sins were shown to him and how he accepted the blame, without making excuses. We must be careful not to judge or condemn the hearts of others as not being sincere, because only God knows. We must be careful to keep our own hearts sincerely devoted.

O Lord God, giver of life and all good things, it is so wonderful to be your child and to know that you know me by name and you know everything about me. It also scares me to death at times because of my weaknesses and when my mind goes to things that should not be there. Help me always have a pure heart and to be completely devoted to you and to serving Jesus as my Lord. Be with those who are sick, taking treatments, having surgeries, and facing other things in their lives. Give them your healing, your strength and peace. I pray in Jesus name.
