Daily Devotional: Psalms 90:1-6

Ps 90:1-6

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning--6 though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered.

James 4:13-17

13 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." 16 As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.

When I was a kid and the “old” people would say that time flies or it seems like only yesterday, I would roll my eyes and wonder what they were talking about. Now, it is a reality for me to think something happened last year, only to discover that it was five or six years ago. We need to treasure the moments.

One of the things I have learned over the years as a preacher is that funerals are held for all ages. It has been my lot to speak at the graveside of both infants and centurions, and all ages between. Death is no respecter of persons and at best, is upon us before we are expecting it. As Paul said, we must redeem the time.

The best way of doing this is to not be selfish. There is no greater blessing in our lives than giving our time to serve others. The best use of our time in serving others is when we pray for them. Then we serve our own families as we spend more quality time with our spouse, our children, and if they are living, with our parents. From there, we can use our time to visit someone who is shut-in at home or who is in the nursing facility. The busier we are in our lives, the more value in the gift of giving our time to others, but also the more blessing we will receive in return. This may be the last day you have to tell someone you love them.

O Lord what a blessing to live as long as I have lived and to have so much family that loves me and shows their love to me. Thank you for all of my family and I ask your special blessing on each one of them. Help me remember to show my love to them while I have the opportunity to so. Thank you for my church family and for so many friends in so many places. Use me to encourage each of them to live for you. Thank you for loving me and making me your child. In Jesus name.
