Daily Devotional: Psalms 86:1-7

Ps 86:1-7

1 Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2 Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. 3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long. 4 Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. 6 Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. 7 In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me.

John 16:26-28

26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."

1 Thess 5:16-18

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

We often associate prayer with problems, trials, grief or pain. In the Bible it is very often connected to our joy and thanksgiving which gives us peace of mind in Christ Jesus. The more we call on the Lord in our everyday lives, the more we will have his peace in our hearts and our lives. The more thankful we are in all things, the more we are making ourselves aware that we owe it all to God. The greater our faith, the more we can live in confidence and the greater our joy is in him.

Certainly we do all have trials in our lives. We all face hardships and grief and pain and bad things do happen to us but even in these we can rejoice. It is within each of us to put our trust totally in the Lord and thus to call on him in our lives. This is much more than just “saying a prayer” or just mouthing some words upward.

We are talking about genuine and absolute trust in God so that we are anxious about nothing. “What, me worry?” “No fear.” So, we pray about everything with thanksgiving. That means we pray about the little things in our lives as well as the big things. It means we talk to God as we walk, as we drive or shave or bathe.

O Lord, it is such a joy to live in Jesus Christ and to know that you are in control of everything in my life. Increase my faith so I will trust you to solve my problems but also to give me your peace and your joy in my heart. Help me show your love to everyone as I rejoice always. Help me be kind and compassionate so I lift others up and keep me from every being judgmental about those around me. Use me to bring someone to Jesus by my words and my life. Give your healing and your peace to those who are sick and hurting. In the name of Jesus I humbly pray.
