Daily Devotional: Psalms 79:8-13

Ps 79:8-13

8 Do not hold against us the sins of the fathers; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. 9 Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake. 10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants. 11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die. 12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the reproach they have hurled at you, O Lord. 13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

Eph 3:20-21

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

We praise God for the good things and the good times in our lives but we also praise him when things are not doing so well. It is in times of trials that our faith is tested but is also made stronger. It is the hard times in life that make us thankful for the good ones. Our sole motive in life should be to bring honor to God and to praise the Lord Jesus Christ in all we do and all we say. Praise the Lord!

In our Psalm, we see that the vengeance being cried for is not for personal gain or satisfaction but is to bring glory to God. There is nothing that honors him much more than when we react to evil with good. When someone says something bad about us or to us and we respond with love and kindness, it honors the Lord. Or when we just keep quiet and say nothing instead of “spouting off” it amazes those who are around us (Remember Jesus at this trial). And our life is about him.

As we allow the Spirit to fill us with kindness, it will even permeate our home life and our families. Kindness is a form of being positive because we trust the Lord to take care of us and we never have to do it on our own. Unfortunately, too often, our homes are the last place where this kindness shows. Remember, God is good.

O Lord, God and ruler over all things, I am so thankful for my family. Thank you for the many friends you have put in my life over the years. Increase my faith so I will turn loose of my desire to control things and let you take care of me. Thank you for sending Jesus into this world to be my Savior and thank you for revealing your will to me in your Word. Thank you for allowing me to be born to parents who loved you and who did their best to teach me your way. Use me to teach others and to encourage those who are struggling. I pray in the name of Jesus.
