Daily Devotional: Psalms 72:1-7

Ps 72:1-7

1 Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. 2 He will judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. 3 The mountains will bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. 4 He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; he will crush the oppressor. 5 He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. 6 He will be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. 7 In his days the righteous will flourish; prosperity will abound till the moon is no more.

1 Cor 10:11-13

11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

David was riding high! He had risen to being king over Israel, the nation was growing and all the people loved him. He was doing all he could to follow the will of God and help the people do the same. Because of his zeal for the Lord and because he sought to lead others in the right way, God had blessed him and was establishing his kingdom. God promised that his descendants would rule forever.

Then came the day he saw Bathsheba bathing, asked about her and then called for her to come to him. Her husband was a soldier and was gone to battle, he was the King and he could do what he wanted. He committed adultery with her and no one would ever know, or so he thought. She soon let him know that she was pregnant with his child. Instead of repenting, he had her husband killed.

How could he go from such a favored place with God to where he was now? Just when he thought everything was great (he was standing tall) his whole life came crashing in on him. So it is with us today. When we get proud and things are really going our way, is when Satan will do his best to bring us down. David repented and God forgave him. When we repent God will forgive us also.

Heavenly Father keep me from ever thinking that I am what I am on my own or that what I have is from my own doing. Help me always remember that all good and perfect gifts come down from you. When I am tempted, give me wisdom and strength to overcome. Increase my faith to seek your will in all things and to live my life accordingly. Help me guard my lips so that every word is full of grace and brings glory to you. Forgive me when I fail. I humbly pray in Jesus name.
