Daily Devotional: Psalms 69:6-12

Ps 69:6-12

6 May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the LORD Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel. 7 For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. 8 I am a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother's sons; 9 for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. 10 When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; 11 when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. 12 Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.

1 Cor 10:31-33

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God- 33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

When I was growing up, this area was a small farming town and county. My dad had a daily radio preaching program on our local station. It was at 12:15 each weekday, just when all the farmers came in to eat their lunch. As a result of this and the fact that he owned a local religious bookstore, pretty much everyone in our county knew him and also knew that I was his son. Because of this, my mother would often remind me that my behavior was a reflection on my dad and on his ministry. My every action either honored or dishonored his name.

As the children of God, we either bring glory to God in what we do and what we say or we dishonor his name. He has called us to be like him. He has set us apart from the world by his Holy Spirit to bring glory to him. As we let our lights shine forth and others see our good works, it is honoring our Father. This is why Paul says that we all sin when we fail to live up to the glory of God.

Jesus said we are to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. He also said that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord God with all our heart, soul, and mind. Our zeal for God and his righteousness should consume us and we should take it personal when God is insulted by others. Praise the Lord!

Heavenly Father I am thankful for your love for me and for revealing your word so I can know how to live for you. Thank you for Jesus as the sacrifice for my sin and thank you for the example he left in bringing glory to you. Thank you for others who love you and who are a constant encouragement to me. Thank you for the many opportunities you have given to me to be able to serve you by serving those around me. Make me a better servant and forgive me when I fail. Help me honor you in every part of my life. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
