Daily Devotional: Psalms 68:15-20

Ps 68:15-20

15 The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains; rugged are the mountains of Bashan. 16 Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the LORD himself will dwell forever? 17 The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary. 18 When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train; you received gifts from men, even from the rebellious--that you, O LORD God, might dwell there. 19 Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Selah 20 Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.

Heb 3:12-14

12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

What does God expect from me? To bring that even down closer to home, what can I do to serve God today? Of course, there is a long list of sins that I should not commit and bad attitudes I should avoid. But these only get us in the position to begin our service to God. I can be kind to everyone. I can be compassionate and consider others as more important than myself. I can forgive every wrong that anyone has ever done against me so that I have no ill will toward anyone.

To serve God, I must learn to be patient with others, especially when I disagree with them or when I do not like what they have done or the way they are doing it. While I like the way I do things and I think I am right in what I believe, it is possible that I am wrong and there are surely other ways to accomplish things. Remember that children are children and do not and cannot think, reason or act like adults (and are not supposed to do so). After all, God has been really patient with me.

I need to use my time today to help someone. It may be a person in need of some physical things or it may be helping an elderly person with their chores or maybe I can teach someone or at least spark an interest in spiritual things. There are countless ways each of us can serve God today, right where we are in life.

Heavenly Father help me look for ways to be the best servant I can be today. Use me to help others with my kindness and even my patience. Guide my lips that each word spoken will build up others and not tear them down. Lord, you have blessed me abundantly so keep me from being selfish with what you have given to me. Open my heart so the Spirit can cultivate his fruit in my life and others will see Jesus in me. Forgive me when I fail and I sin. I pray in Jesus name.
