Daily Devotional: Psalms 64:1-10

Ps 64:1-10

1 Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy. 2 Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from that noisy crowd of evildoers. 3 They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their words like deadly arrows. 4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent man; they shoot at him suddenly, without fear. 5 They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, "Who will see them?" 6 They plot injustice and say, "We have devised a perfect plan!" Surely the mind and heart of man are cunning. 7 But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be struck down. 8 He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. 9 All mankind will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done. 10 Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him; let all the upright in heart praise him!

John 3:19-21

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

Since the days of Cain, people have thought they could hide their actions from God and would not be held accountable. But God knows and he sees what we are doing and even what is in our hearts. He warned Cain because his heart was evil and was set on doing wrong. After he killed his brother, God told him that the innocent blood of Abel was crying to him from the ground. God knows.

But the other side of this is that God knows when our hearts are right and when we do some good deed, even in the darkness. Jesus said that when we give a cup of cold water to a person who is thirsty, we will not lose our reward because God sees and knows what we have done. When we are done wrong and we react with kindness instead of revenge, God sees. So we walk in the light and he forgives.

O Lord God, it is so wonderful to be your child and to know that in spite of all the wrong I have done and all the times I have failed to be what you want me to be, you still love me and you have forgiven me in Jesus Christ. Instill your love in me so I can be patient and forgiving toward others who mistreat me or who do me wrong. Guard my heart so others will remember me for my kindness. Help me be like Jesus, even when there is no one else around and only you can see or know what I am thinking or doing. Increase my faith. I pray in Jesus name.
