Daily Devotional: Psalms 48:9-14

Ps 48:9-14

9 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. 10 Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. 11 Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments. 12 Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, 13 consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

1 Cor 10:11-13

11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

We are to learn from history. This is true for our personal lives where we learn from our mistakes and we remember to not make them again. This is true for any nation or organization. We try things and find that some of them work and some do not, so reasonably intelligent people learn from these experiences. This is also true in our spiritual lives where we are seeking to grow spiritually.

Learning from history means that we learn from the successes and failures of other people or groups also. The children of Israel made about every kind of mistake a nation could make and God has written these for our learning. While some of them apply to the nation in which we live, most of these are actually written for our personal benefit. The one lesson that stands out above all others is that we are to trust God and put him first in our lives, following his will for us.

We, like all who have lived before us, are and will be tempted by the devil to go against the will of God and sin. We must not put our trust in ourselves because this is setting us up for failure. As we trust God and depend on him to help us face each trial, he is faithful and will provide a way for us to be successful.

Heavenly Father I am so glad that you have provided a way for me to overcome every temptation and to always be faithful to you. Thank you for your great love and your continued forgiveness because I know, even at my best, I still sin. Give me wisdom to be used by you in your service. Give me a pure heart so that I want to be like Jesus in every way. Help me know when to speak and what to say but also help me know when to keep silent. Thank you for my family and my friends and I ask your blessings on each of them. I pray in Jesus name.
