Daily Devotional: Psalms 45:1-5

Ps 45:1-5

1 My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. 2 Thou art fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Thy lips; Therefore God has blessed Thee forever. 3 Gird Thy sword on Thy thigh, O Mighty One, In Thy splendor and Thy majesty! 4 And in Thy majesty ride on victoriously, For the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; Let Thy right hand teach Thee awesome things. 5 Thine arrows are sharp; The peoples fall under Thee; Thine arrows are in the heart of the King's enemies.

1 Cor 15:53-57

54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

David was a wonderful king of Israel who tried to carry out the will of God in all of his dealings. He ruled and judged with justice but also with mercy. Even though he was ruler over a world empire, he never forgot how he got there so he always depended on God for his wisdom. His desire was for the good of the people and the glory of God. So God promised him that his descendants would rule forever.

This promise has found its fulfilment in one even greater than David and in one who never even committed a sin. This one proclaimed that his will was to do the will of the Father in heaven and with this attitude, he never sought his own vengeance or worked for his own glory. While here on earth he never sat on a physical throne or ruled over a physical kingdom. In fact, it was the very people of Israel who rejected him as their king and who killed him.

But God raised him from the grave and has given him all authority in both heaven and on earth. Jesus is now the King of kings and he is Lord of lords. His kingdom spans the entire globe and lasts for all the ages. Jesus has won the victory over death for all those who belong to him so we can live with no fear of death.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for the joy you give in Jesus. Thank you for the peace you put into my heart so I do not have to fear death – or anything that ever comes my way. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus and never forget that I am just passing through this world and that heaven is my eternal home. Help me guard my tongue so I do not say anything to hurt others but give me wisdom to speak with grace to build up and encourage. Give your healing and your peace to those who are sick and to those who are hurting. I humbly pray in Jesus name.
