Daily Devotional: Psalms 34:8-14

Ps 34:8-14

8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. 9 Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. 11 Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12 Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, 13 keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. 14 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Eph 4:1-3

1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

The result of the Spirit living in us is love, joy and peace. The wisdom that comes from God is pure, then peace-loving and considerate. We are told to be at peace with everyone, as much as it depends on us. When we really put our trust in God, we rid ourselves of anxiety and are given the peace of God that is beyond our ability to explain or even understand. Christians are all about peace – inside our hearts and minds as well as peace with all those around us.

Of the seven things that are said to be an abomination to God, one of them is the sowing of discord among brothers. When people turn from God and refuse to acknowledge him as God, he lets them go their own way and they become filled with malice, strife, hatred and bitterness, all of which Christians are told to get rid of or put to death in our hearts and lives. Strife is from Satan and peace from God.

This means that if our lives are always filled with strife and we have all kinds of bad feelings toward others, we need to be looking inside of ourselves. We need to examine our hearts and quit blaming others. As the children of God we are to be peacemakers. The first century Christians were known for their love and peaceful attitudes, even toward those who hated them and were their enemies. We need to do our best to be like them, seeking peace and pursuing it.

Lord God, help me be at peace with you, with myself and with all those around me. Increase my faith so I will want to make your will my own in every part of my life. Slow me down and open my eyes so I will enjoy every part of your creation and the beauty of it. Help me rejoice always, even in the middle of problems and trials. Use me where you want me to be used and in the way you know is best for me. Give your healing when it is your will and give your peace to those who are sick and those taking treatments. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
