Daily Devotional: Psalms 13:1-6

Ps 13:1-6

1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? 3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; 4 my enemy will say, "I have overcome him," and my foes will rejoice when I fall. 5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.

James 5:13

13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.

When we face our darkest night, we turn to God in prayer and we find relief and peace that overwhelms our souls. It is so good to pour out our heart to the Lord and to know that he hears us, he cares about us and he will respond to us. It may be a trial in the form of sickness or some disaster that has come to us or it may be in the form of temptations that overcome us but either way God is able to take us through it and make things right. The Lord has been so good to all who are his.

When things are good in our lives, songs seem to flow from our lips. We praise the Lord for his kindness and we extol his goodness to us. We sing of his mighty power and his omnipotence. Many of our songs are about our eternal home and the glories and joys that will be ours one day. Singing lifts our spirits and gives us a new perspective on life so we sing songs of thanksgiving for his blessings.

But when life is not good to us at the moment and it seems all is going the wrong way, we must both sing and pray. Even when the world crashes in on us, we need to give thanks to God for all the good things he has done for us. When we are in pain (whether physical or emotional) we can thank God for all the years we have not suffered. No matter what, good or bad, we can thank God for the friends he has put in our lives. Some of them have been with us for years and others maybe only a short time but friends are God’s way of getting us through the darkest days and also giving us someone with whom we can celebrate our victories and joys.

Thank you God, for the many friends you have put in my life over the years. Thank you for the friends who have been with me in some hard times and who have stood with me when it seemed no one else cared. Thank you for the friends with whom I can pour out my heart and confess my weakness and my fears and know that they love me and will never betray me. Use me to be a friend to others and to help them in their times of need. Help me be there to help someone rejoice in their victories as well. Thank you for Jesus, my best friend. In his name I pray.
