Daily Devotional: Psalms 144:9-15

Ps 144:9-15

9 I will sing a new song to you, O God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you, 10 to the one who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David from the deadly sword. 11 Deliver me and rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. 12 Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace. 13 Our barns will be filled with every kind of provision. Our sheep will increase by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields; 14 our oxen will draw heavy loads. There will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets. 15 Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.

2 Peter 1:3-4

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Many years ago my very young nephew was being taught to pray and was asked to pray at the table for their food. He thanked God for the food, for mommy and daddy, for the plate, the fork, knife, spoon, the beans, and then it kept going. In his young mind, he reasoned that if we had it, it must have come from God.

While we may find this humorous or amusing, everything we have in our lives, including life itself, is from our heavenly Father. When was the last time you tried to count your blessings and name them one by one? If we are honest, it will surprise us what the Lord has done! The air we breath and the water we drink, the sunshine and the rain are all from the hand of God who takes care of us.

This exercise of counting our blessings will cause us to stop and think and then be grateful for all God is doing for us. It will be a humbling experience as we quickly realize that without him, we are nothing because all we have and all we are is by his grace. It brings us joy because it shows us his care and the love in our lives.

Heavenly Father I thank you for the sunshine of the day, the rain that waters the earth and seasons that change in their time. Thank you for all the people you have put in my life, especially those in my family. Thank you for the material things you have given me and I ask you to help me to use it to your glory and never to be selfish or greedy. Thank you for the many spiritual blessings in Jesus Christ and the joy that each of these gives me. Thank you for the peace of mind that comes from a conscience washed clean by the blood of Jesus. In His name I pray.
