Daily Devotional: Psalms 143:7-12

Ps 143:7-12

7 Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. 8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. 9 Rescue me from my enemies, O LORD, for I hide myself in you. 10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. 11 For your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble. 12 In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am your servant.

John 12:34-36

34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?" 35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

The Psalmist went from being the most loved and popular person alive in his day, to being hunted by the army he once led himself. Later he was ruler of the world but then at times he was up against some of the most powerful nations around him. He had personal tragedies and he had family problems. He had one son who killed his brother and then led a military coup to take over the country.

In all of this, from the time he was a lad, he put his trust in the Lord. When things were going his way, he trusted the Lord and did his best to follow his will. When it seemed that everything had gone wrong, he trusted his God. In the midst of the disasters and in the raging battles, he depended on God to deliver him. When he was shown his sins, he admitted them and asked God to forgive him.

This absolute trust in God is the kind of faith that will save us today. We follow his will to the best of our ability and we depend on him to lead us in life. Our faith will keep us from worry and deliver us from anxiety. We do not live in fear because we have put God first in every part of our lives and trust him to protect us.

Heavenly Father increase my faith and help me trust you in every part of my life, in all I do and all I say. Thank you for all the times you have delivered me from the evils of life and even from those who would seek to harm me and discredit me. I thank you for the provisions you have given me when it seemed there was no way for me to make it on my own. Thank you for forgiving me when I have failed to live in a way that honored you and have sinned. I pray in the name of Jesus.
