Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:137-144

Ps 119:137-144      Tsadhe

137 Righteous are you, O LORD, and your laws are right. 138 The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. 139 My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. 140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. 141 Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. 143 Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. 144 Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live.

Gal 3:24-29

24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. 26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

God is right. Let that simple statement soak into your brain. Since God is right, it means everything he does or says is right. But how do we know he is right? The very fact that he is God and is the giver of all moral virtue, and love is a part of his nature means that he only wants and does what is best for others. His word is righteous because he is righteous and he wants us to be righteous too.

But God is just. This means that anything contrary to his perfect and righteous nature is sin. When we fail to live up to his glory, we sin. Sin deserves (and must be) punished by spiritual death or eternal separation from God. He cannot and does not overlook our sin but in his love has provided a way for it to be forgiven.

God loves us so much that he sent his special and unique Son from glory to become one of us. As a man, he lived that perfect life, living up to the glory of God. He then was executed by crucifixion because of our guilt and our sin so that we might be counted as righteous in him. Fellowship with God is restored in him.

Heavenly Father it is so wonderful to be your child, to be counted righteous by the sacrifice of Jesus. Thank you for sending Jesus to this world to make this possible for me and for all who will accept your grace given in your gospel. Use me to serve others and to not be selfish with what you have given me. Give me wisdom to use my time wisely and in a way that honors you. Be with your people that they will remain faithful and made stronger as we go through some uncertain and trying times. Forgive me when I fail you and I sin. I pray in Jesus name.
