Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:49-56

Ps 119:49-56           Zayin

49 Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. 51 The arrogant mock me without restraint, but I do not turn from your law. 52 I remember your ancient laws, O LORD, and I find comfort in them. 53 Indignation grips me because of the wicked, who have forsaken your law. 54 Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I lodge. 55 In the night I remember your name, O LORD, and I will keep your law. 56 This has been my practice: I obey your precepts.

Eph 5:6-11

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.

We are living in trying and uncertain times, such as have not been seen in the last one hundred years in our country. The virus has changed the way we do almost everything and has changed us in many ways. The political unrest and uncertainty has generated feelings of fear which almost always produces hatred and bitterness. Our economy is busting at the seams but the media tells us that we have millions who are unemployed and who are suffering from it. We do in fact have far too many who are homeless. Where do we turn and what do we do?

The word of God gives us hope. We can learn of a God who loves us and who is watching over us. What we learn most of all is that this world is not our home, we are just passing through in preparation for a better place. Life is not about what we face now or what we can accumulate now. Life is about the hereafter and it is about bringing honor to God. It is about becoming like Jesus in every way.

In Jesus Christ we can rejoice always, even in the face of suffering and in the midst of pain. We never fear or become anxious because we are putting the way of God first and we know he is taking care of us and our needs. We go to bed and sleep each night because we are free from guilt through the cleansing blood of Jesus.

Heavenly Father it is with joy that I come to you in the midst of all the uncertainty around me and praise your name as the one thing that is certain. Your word is truth and the truth has set me free from the chains of Satan and this world. Use me to honor you by serving others. Help me remember that each deed done in the name of Jesus, no matter how big or small, is never overlooked or forgotten. I ask you to be with your children who are being persecuted for their faith in you and give them strength and peace in Jesus. I pray in his holy name.
