Daily Devotional: Psalms 90:1-6

Ps 90:1-6

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning--6 though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered.

2 Peter 3:8-10

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Life is short. We may live for a hundred years but this is brief in light of the age of the world and for sure, in light of eternity. As we get older, life seems to move at a much faster pace and soon that which was young is now old. And time marches on without regard to our feelings or what we may have accomplished.

But God is eternal. Time does not have the same effect on him that it has on us as we scramble to get things done. We face deadlines, our day or week is about to be over and we must hurry. Before we know it, another year is gone and we did not keep the resolutions we made or accomplish the plans we had devised.

What really matters is eternity. Am I ready to enter into eternity? Once we are there, our destiny will be fixed. There will not be any second chances to make things right with God. We will confess Jesus as Lord but will he be our Savior? It is now that we can accept him and today is the day of salvation for those who have never confessed him. As we focus on eternity, we must see Jesus and seek to live for him. We lay up treasures in heaven by the way we live and the things we do.

Heavenly Father it is mind boggling to try to understand eternity. Every part of my life is controlled by the finite and by time. As you count time, my life is a fleeting breath which is here today but is soon gone. Help me make the most of my time and use every moment to glorify you in the way I live and the things I say. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Thank you for making it possible for me to be forgiven of all my sin and to be made righteous before you. Fill me with your Spirit so your love will be made complete in me. I pray in Jesus name.
