Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:17-24

Ps 78:17-24

17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High. 18 They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved. 19 They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the desert? 20 When he struck the rock, water gushed out, and streams flowed abundantly. But can he also give us food? Can he supply meat for his people?" 21 When the LORD heard them, he was very angry; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel, 22 for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. 23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens; 24 he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.

1 Cor 10:11-13

11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you do not fall!

Every other year my siblings and our families have a family reunion. We rent a really BIG house and stay together for a week. Most years there are between forty and fifty of us and so far, we have all managed to leave alive. The thing that really amazes me each time is the amount of food we consume. We plan our meals, make a list of what we need and designate a few to go to the store and buy groceries. When they return it takes a lot of trips to get it all inside.

Now, can you imagine supplying water and feeding close to two million people for over forty years?! We read that God gave them water or he sent manna or quail, but do we let it sink in how much was required? We are amazed that Jesus fed four thousand and then five thousand with only a few fish and bread; and rightly so. It was a miracle indeed. But God fed millions and gave them water to drink; not just one meal but for years with nothing but the power of his word.

We have no reason to believe that God has lost his concern for his people or that he has lost his power over the years. God is still in control and when his time is right, the Covid virus will go away and meanwhile, he will take care of his own.

Lord God increase my faith so I will not be filled with fear. Give me wisdom to do what I need to do to avoid being sick, from this virus or from other things. But I know that whatever happens to me or my loved ones, my goal is to be with you in eternity and that you will never allow me to be tempted beyond the strength you have given to me to bear it. Help me use this pandemic to show my faith and to show my love as I do what I can to help others. Be with the leaders of your people to make wise decisions about worship services. I pray in the name of Jesus.
