Daily Devotional: Psalms 73:23-28

Ps 73:23-28

23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

James 4:5-8

5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?   6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

One of the things about life is that the very things that sustain our lives are also the same things that can destroy us. God has given us so much to use but most of these can be misused and do us harm. We need sun light but too much sun is bad. We need water but too much in the wrong way and we drown. Then there is the study of nuclear science from which we get the atomic bomb but we also get the field of nuclear medicine to save lives. It is God who has given us all of this.

But he has given us the ability to reason and to control our behavior. We can choose if we swim or drown and we (mankind) determine the outcome of splitting the atom. Our ability to reason in this fashion and to this degree is one of the things that sets us apart from the animals of the world who live by instinct.

We are also given a conscience which is guided by an innate sense of morality and determines for us what is right and wrong. All mankind has a desire to reach out to God and find life beyond what we know here on earth. The truly wise person will find eternal life in Jesus Christ and will put him and his righteousness first in their lives. Indeed, the fool has said in his heart that there is no God.

Heavenly Father it is such a joy to be able to know you and to live for you. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Help me open my heart to your Spirit and to his bidding, his molding and his wisdom so I will be more like Jesus every day. I ask your blessings and your care on those who are hurting financially due to the virus and the regulations imposed upon us. Give wisdom and success to those who are seeking a vaccine for Covid-19. I ask you to heal the great divide in the politics of our nation and help us live in peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
