Daily Devotional: Psalms 70:1-5

Ps 70:1-5

1 Hasten, O God, to save me; O LORD, come quickly to help me. 2 May those who seek my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. 3 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" turn back because of their shame. 4 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "Let God be exalted!" 5 Yet I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.

Matt 5:14-16

14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

There is nothing that will let our lights shine more than when we put our trust in God. While the world is complaining and living in fear, we as the children of God can have calm and peace in our knowledge that our Father is in control. This does not mean we understand why things are as they are or that we know when and how all this pandemic will end. It means that we trust God, his will and his timing to bring the disease to a halt when he knows it is best for his own.

Meanwhile we can make the best of a bad situation as we stay home and follow the laws of the government where we live. We are not being persecuted by the officials when we are told to not gather in large groups. They are not out to get us when they forbid us to exercise some of our basic freedoms, such as worship. The government is actually doing exactly what God established them to do. They are working for our good and the health of all citizens by working to end Covid-19.

God used quarantine in the Old Testament for those who had communicable diseases. These people were temporally unable to meet and worship with the other Jews, offer sacrifices as commanded in the Law or even live with their own families. We need to exercise good judgment, along with love and compassion.

Heavenly Father I put my trust in you. I know that Covid-19 and the pandemic it has caused is nothing in your sight and that it will end when you are ready for it to end. Meanwhile, increase my faith and help me open my heart to the working of your Spirit. Grow in me love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Give wisdom to the leaders of our nation and protect those who are in the medical profession. Use this pandemic to your glory as I put my trust in you and draw closer to you. I pray in Jesus name.
